Puerto Vallarta is one of the most popular vacation destinations in Mexico, thanks to its beautiful beaches, affordable prices, great foodie scene, and fun activities. Think breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality, all year round!
But when it comes to visiting Puerto Vallarta during summer, is it worth it?
After all, summer is low season in Puerto Vallarta for a reason…right?
Not so fast!
I happen to visit Puerto Vallarta regularly during the summer. I spent my 30th birthday here (and I’m a June baby), and have taken many summer trips to this Mexican beach destination since.
While the peak season might be the first choice for many visitors, there’s also plenty of reasons you might want to book your trip to Puerto Vallarta during the summer or low season months. In this blog post, I’ll break down the advantages and considerations for off-season travel to Puerto Vallarta.
Let’s dive in!
When Is Low Season in Puerto Vallarta?
Low season in Puerto Vallarta typically falls between the months of May and October. During the summer months, fewer tourists come to this beachside town compared to peak season, which is typically the winter months and holiday season. The exact timing of low season may vary slightly, but it generally coincides with the hotter and more humid summer months.
Even though this period brings occasional rain showers, humidity and the rare possibility of tropical storms, with proper planning and flexibility, visiting Puerto Vallarta during low season can be a memorable and budget-friendly experience.
What is the Weather Like in Puerto Vallarta During Summer?
Weather is probably the number one factor in what separates low season in Puerto Vallarta from high season. During the summer months, you can expect warm and tropical weather. The beachside town warms up, with high temperatures ranging from 85°F to 90°F (29°C to 32°C).
Keep in mind that the humidity is higher during the summer months. Since Puerto Vallarta is located on the Pacific coast, the summer months bring occasional rain showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the late afternoons or evenings. The good news is that these showers are usually short-lived, and they’re the reason Puerto Vallarta has such lush greenery and vibrant landscapes to enjoy. Most days, you can plan for a beautiful morning with sunshine by the sea, with light showers in the late afternoon (which actually helps cool things down!).
Despite the occasional rain, the summer season offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the stunning beaches, water activities, and outdoor adventures that Puerto Vallarta has to offer.
Is Puerto Vallarta Crowded During Summer?
If you’re looking for tranquility and serenity (i.e. fewer people and crowds), Puerto Vallarta in summer is the destination for you!
As the crowds dwindle during the low season, Puerto Vallarta unveils its quieter side. You’ll have ample space to enjoy the stunning beaches, wander through charming cobblestone streets, and take in the beauty of the city without the hustle and bustle that accompanies the peak tourist season. Hotels and resorts tend to be less crowded in summer, too, which means no fighting over pool chairs!
Is Puerto Vallarta Expensive to Visit in Summer?
Traveling during low season often comes with the added perk of saving money–and Puerto Vallarta is no exception! Whether you’re a budget-conscious traveler or simply looking to make your money go further, visiting Puerto Vallarta during summer allows you to experience luxury at a fraction of the cost.
From accommodations to dining and activities, you’ll enjoy significant discounts and special offers that stretch your dollar further than traveling in winter or spring.
Hotels tend to be much cheaper during low season, as occupancy rates dip and more rooms go unbooked. If you’re looking for Puerto Vallarta hotel deals, definitely book your trip during summer!
Another bonus? Flights to Puerto Vallarta during summer months are generally cheaper, too! Keep in mind there may be less connectivity, so this works best if you’re flying from a major airport.
Puerto Vallarta Events and Festivals During Low Season
While summer is low season in Puerto Vallarta, the town has a bustling calendar of festivals and cultural events during these months. From June to September, you can immerse yourself in local celebrations such as Puerto Vallarta Restaurant Week, a tasty celebration of the local dining scene held in May and June, or the annual Sea Turtle Release, a conservation effort held from July through December each year.
A few miles north in Nuevo Nayarit (formerly Nuevo Vallarta), summer festivities include the Bandera Bay Fishing Tournament and the weekly Art Festival, held at the Marina on Saturdays all summer long.
Are Puerto Vallarta Restaurants and Attractions Still Open in Summer?
Despite it being low season, most restaurants and attractions in Puerto Vallarta remain open during the summer months. While it’s true that some establishments may adjust their hours or temporarily close for renovations or vacations, the town still offers a wide array of dining options and attractions to explore.
From beachside eateries to upscale restaurants, you’ll find plenty of culinary delights to satisfy your taste buds. Additionally, popular attractions such as the Malecon boardwalk, the iconic Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and the vibrant Zona Romantica are open year-round, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the city’s rich culture and history. Whether you’re seeking a relaxing meal with an ocean view or embarking on an adventure to discover Puerto Vallarta’s charm, you’ll find many options available to make your summer visit memorable.
